Family 13-c
A top-class filly, Myrtle Charm had the talent to be right up with the top colt of her crop, Blue Peter, who beat her only a neck in the Futurity Stakes. She produced another high-class racing filly in Myrtle's Jet (by Jet Pilot) but made a still bigger contribution through her winning daughter Fair Charmer (by Jet Pilot's son Jet Action), granddam of Seattle Slew.
Race record
8 starts, 5 wins, 1 second, 0 third, US$81,830
1948:
1950:
Honors
American champion 2-year-old filly (1948)
Assessments
Topweighted at 121 pounds among fillies on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1948.
As an individual
A tall, handsome bay filly who reminded many horsemen of her granddam Myrtlewood, Myrtle Charm had a short back but was not blocky, though she had powerful muscling through her stifles and gaskins. She had a long stride and a sensible temperament.
As a producer
Myrtle Charm produced nine named foals, of which five started and four won. Her best was Myrtle's Jet, who won five stakes races at ages 2 and 4 and was considered among the best of her age at 2. Myrtle's Jet was not a particularly successful broodmare, leaving it to Fair Charmer to perpetuate the family through 1972 Fair Grounds Oaks winner My Charmer (by Poker). The dam of the great Seattle Slew, My Charmer also produced 1983 Two Thousand Guineas (ENG-G1) winner Lomond (by Northern Dancer), multiple Irish Group 2 winner Seattle Dancer (by Nijinsky II) and stakes winner Argosy (by Affirmed).
Connections
Myrtle Charm was bred by Brownell Combs and Leslie Combs II. She was purchased by Mrs. Elizabeth Graham for $27,000 from the 1947 Keeneland yearling sale and raced in the colors of Mrs. Graham's Maine Chance Farm. She was trained by Jimmy Smith.
Pedigree notes
Myrtle Charm is inbred 4x4x5 to Broomstick and 5x4 to Peter Pan. She is a half sister to Spinosa (by Count Fleet), dam of stakes winner Masked Lady (by Spy Song). Masked Lady, in turn, produced French Group 3 winner Raise a Lady (by Raise a Native) and stakes winner Who's to Know (by Fleet Nasrullah), dam of Grade 2 winner Angel Island (by Cougar II).
Myrtle Charm's dam Crepe Myrtle is a winning half sister to 1942 Kentucky Oaks winner Miss Dogwood (by Bull Dog) and 1943 American co-champion juvenile filly Durazna (by Bull Dog's son Bull Lea). Miss Dogwood produced three stakes winners including Sequence, (by Count Fleet), second dam of Mr. Prospector, while Durazna is the second dam of three stakes winners and the ancestress of champions Ajina, Highest Trump, Pretty Cast, Tudor Queen, and Typecast among other good horses. Crepe Myrtle is also a half sister to Spring Beauty (by Sir Gallahad III), dam of multiple English stakes winner Young Man's Fancy (by Alycidon) and third dam of 1971 Kentucky Oaks winner Silent Beauty. The dam of Crepe Myrtle is 1936 American champion sprinter and handicap female Myrtlewood (by Blue Larkspur), a half sister to three other stakes winners and a granddaughter of the great American and French foundation mare Frizette.
