A member of Northern Dancer’s third crop, Northern Jove was one of the stallion’s lesser sons on the race track, winning only one minor stakes race. In spite of his lack of racetrack accomplishments, he proved a quite useful sire, his progeny including 1978 American co-champion 2-year-old filly Candy Eclair, 1983 Italian champion 2-year-old male Northern Tempest, and the important Argentine-based sire Equalize.

Pedigree notes
Northern Jove is inbred 4x4 to 1936 Derby Stakes winner and 1946 American champion sire Mahmoud. He is a half brother to Absaretch (by Dancer’s Image), dam of Group 1-placed French stakes winner Gap of Dunloe (by Sassafras) and 1993 Swiss champion 3-year-old male Badolato (by Far North). He is also a half brother to Twisp (by Dancer’s Image), dam of restricted stakes winner Sharpening Up (by Sharpen Up) and second dam of 1999 Canadian champion 3-year-old male Woodcarver.
Northern Jove and his siblings were produced from stakes-placed Junonia, a half sister to 1965 Delaware Oaks winner Juanita (by Decathlon), to stakes winner Red Hook (by Royal Sting), and to French hurdle stakes winner Porto Novo (by Hill Rise). Juanita, in turn, is the dam of Grade 3 winner Wanika (by Sadair), the second dam of Grade 3 winner Cinegita, and the third dam of English Group 3 winner Storm Star and Brazilian champion sire Choctaw Ridge.
The next dam in Northern Jove’s tail-female line, Pavonia, is a winning daughter of 1944 American champion 2-year-old male Pavot and a half sister to Turkish Delight (by Count Fleet), dam of stakes winner Needleson (by Needles). The sisters are out of 1949 Alabama Stakes winner Adile, a Mahmoud half sister to 1952 Kentucky Broodmare of the Year Ace Card (by Case Ace).
