After showing brilliant talent as a juvenile, Personal Ensign suffered a fractured pastern that should have ended her career. Instead, she returned to the races in September 1987 and demonstrated that she had lost none of her ability or her zest for racing. Continuing on at 4, she capped her career with a dramatic victory over 1988 Kentucky Derby (USA-G1) winner Winning Colors in the Breeders' Cup Distaff (USA-G1), concluding her career as the first major American runner to go unbeaten since the great Colin 80 years earlier. She was a champion in the paddocks as well, earning honors as the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's Broodmare of the Year for 1996.

As an individual
A rangy, attractive, good-sized bay mare with a rather angular make and a long head, Personal Ensign was strong-willed, independent and stubborn. She displayed tremendous determination at the track but was aloof at best and fractious at worst in response to human handling. She possessed a strong maternal instinct and was an alpha mare in the broodmare paddocks.
As a producer
A Reine-de-Course as designated by pedigree analyst Ellen Parker, Personal Ensign produced 10 named foals. Of these, nine started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
