Puerto Escondido was slow to develop but came on strongly in 2017 and ended up winning six of his last seven starts. His victories included a four-length romp in Argentina’s top race for horses 3 and older, the 2017 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini (ARG-G1). After injury put an end to an attempted defense of his title as 2017 Argentine Horse of the Year, he retired to stud at his birthplace, Haras El Mallin.

Assessments
Rated at 120 pounds in the Long category on the 2017 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 14 pounds below overall highweight Arrogate and 8 pounds below the highest-rated horse in the Long category, Enable (the European Horse of the Year), but best among South American runners over any distance.
Rated at 120 pounds in the Intermediate category on the 2018 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 10 pounds below co-highweights Cracksman and Winx (who also jointly led the Intermediate category) but best among South American runners over any distance.
As an individual
A big, rugged, rather coarse bay horse with plenty of substance, Puerto Escondido was retired due to a tendon tear in his left foreleg that he suffered in his last race, the 2018 Gran Premio Miguel Alfredo Martinez de Hoz. He did his best running coming off the pace with a powerful run.
As a stallion
Puerto Escondido’s first foals were born in 2020.
Connections
Bred by Antonio Bullrich’s Haras El Mallin, Puerto Escondido raced for Caballeriza Facundito. He was trained by Pablo Sahagian and was ridden to his win in the Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini by Osvaldo Alderete. He has stood at Haras El Mallin since 2019.
Pedigree notes
Puerto Escondido is inbred 4x5x4 to the great international sire Northern Dancer, the 1964 Canadian Horse of the Year and American champion 3-year-old male. He is also inbred 5x5 to 1957 American Horse of the Year and eight-time American champion sire Bold Ruler. He is a full brother to Argentine listed stakes winner Surfing Boy and a half brother to 2011 Gran Premio Nacional (Argentine Derby) winner Lange (by Aptitude). He is also a half brother to Sunset Beach (by Intérprete), second dam of Argentine Group 2 winner Hawaiian Love.
Surf Point, the dam of Puerto Escondido, was the Argentine Broodmare of the Year in 2017. She is out of Group 2-placed Argentine listed stakes winner Surfing (by Southern Halo). Surface is also a half sister to 1983 Premio Pedro Goenaga (ARG-G2) winner Surefire (by Salt Marsh).
Sun Cry, the dam of Surface and her siblings, is by the stakes-winning Beau Max horse Solazo out of Culminant, by Eight Thirty’s good sire son Make Tracks. She is a full sister to Sun Song, dam of two-time Gran Premio Maipú (ARG-G1) winner Sumatra (by Farnesio).

Fun facts
- Puerto Escondido is the name of a popular tourist center on the coast of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico. It is known for diving and snorkeling in the nearby waters and hosts international surfing competitions in August and November. The name means “Hidden Port” in English and is said to have its roots in a local legend regarding a Mixtec woman who escaped her pirate captors by leaping overboard from their ship, swimming to shore, and hiding in the jungle just beyond the beach.
- Puerto Escondido broke his maiden in the 2017 Gran Premio Miguel Martínez de Hoz.
- In the 2017 Gran Premio Carlos Pellegrini, Puerto Escondido defeated seven other Group 1 winners including 2016 Argentine champion stayer Sixties Song, who would go on to capture honors as Argentine champion older male in 2018. Another of his victims was Village King, already the winner of a leg of the Argentine Triple Crown, who would go on to become Argentina’s Horse of the Year in 2021.
