There were only five fillies in the 1963 Kentucky Oaks, and three of them might as well not have been there for anything but show money. The action up front was all between Sally Ship and Bonnie's Girl, and at the end Sally Ship sailed in by five lengths. It was by far her biggest moment of glory. She proved a disappointing broodmare after her retirement but received a measure of redemption through her daughter Sally Stark, dam of American champion 3-year-old filly Tiffany Lass and Grade 1 winner Valdez.

As an individual
A brown mare; no further information available.
As a producer
Sally Ship produced six named foals, of which two started; neither won. Her only foal of significance was Sally Stark (1970, by Graustark), dam of 1986 American champion 3-year-old filly Tiffany Lass (by Bold Forbes), 1979 Swaps Stakes (USA-G1) winner Valdez (by Exclusive Native) and multiple stakes winner Bold Archon (by Bold Forbes). Sally Stark is the second dam of five stakes winners and is the third dam of Japanese Group 2 winner Yamanin Kingly and Japanese Group 3 winner Yamaninmerveilleux.
Connections
Sally Ship was bred by Captain Harry F. Guggenheim and raced for his Cain Hoy Stable. She was trained by Woody Stephens. When Guggenheim dispersed his breeding stock in November 1969, Sally Ship, then in foal to Graustark, was purchased by Arnold Winick, for US$220,000. She was exported to England in 1970 and died there in 1974.
Pedigree notes
Sally Ship is inbred 3x3 to undefeated Nearco, a two-time champion sire in England, and 4x3 to the important broodmare Mumtaz Begum. She is also inbred 4x4x4 to English and French champion sire Pharos and 5x5 to 1918 English Triple Crown winner Gainsborough. She is a half sister to 1960 Knickerbocker Handicap winner Quiz Star (by Dark Star), 1966 Nassau County Stakes winner Pluck (by Double Jay) and multiple stakes winner Good Fight (by Armageddon). She is also a half sister to multiple stakes-placed Spar Maid (by Spartan Valor), dam of 1967 Coaching Club American Oaks winner Quillo Queen (by Princequillo; dam of 1983 Dwyer Handicap, USA-G1, winner Au Point, by Lyphard). In addition, Sally Ship is a half sister to Armed Venus (by Armageddon), third dam of Grade 2 winner Beboppin Baby, Grade 3 winner Callide Valley and South African Group 3 winner Lupine Lady.
Sally Ship and her siblings are out of the English import Nut Brown Maid, whose stakes-placed half sister Las Quevas (by Anwar) is the dam of 1970 Gran Criterium winner Lascro (by Crocket), who trained on to become an Italian Group 3 winner. Nut Brown Maid is also a half sister to Chnoupi (by Le Lavandou), second dam of two-time Belgian champion Jacta Est.
Quincey, the dam of Nut Brown Maid and her siblings, is a daughter of 1936 French champion 3-year-old male Mieuxce, who was the English/Irish leading broodmare sire of 1958. She was produced from the Tetratema mare Queen's Pipe, herself a daughter of the Gainsborough mare Queen's Gain.
