Singletary proved to be one of the great bargains of the turf after selling for US$3,200 as a yearling. A 16-1 long shot in the 2004 Breeders’ Cup Mile (USA-G1), the consistent Singletary rewarded his backers with a half-length victory over fellow long shot Antonius Pius. A Grade 2 winner prior to his Breeders’ Cup win, he added two more Grade 2 wins to his resume as a 5-year-old before retiring to stud, where he was not a success.

Assessments
Rated at 118 pounds in the Mile category on the 2004 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, 12 pounds below overall highweight Ghostzapper (the American Horse of the Year), who also tied with Rakti for leadersip in the Mile category with 123 pounds.
Rated at 116 pounds in the Mile category on the 2005 World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings, 14 pounds below overall highweight Hurricane Run (the European Horse of the Year) and 12 pounds below the top-rated miler, Ghostzapper.
As an individual
A muscular, burly, plain bay horse, Singletary had well-sloped shoulders, prominent withers, a barrel chest, a straight hind leg, and a long, sloping pelvis. He lacked a sharp turn of foot but could deliver a long, powerful drive.
As a stallion
According to Jockey Club records, Singletary sired 42 winners and three stakes winners from 119 named foals of racing age. None of Singletary’s runners came anywhere close to him in ability.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Singletary was bred by Disler Farms. After selling for just US$3,200 as a yearling through the 2001 Keeneland October sale, he was purchased by trainer Don Chatlos Jr. for US$30,000 as part of a package deal while Chatlos was buying two other young horses being broken and trained in Florida. He was owned by Little Red Feather Racing and trained by Chatlos. He was ridden to his win in the Breeders’ Cup Mile by David Flores. Singletary entered stud in California in 2006 at Cardiff Stock Farm, moving to Harris Farms in 2009. In 2012, he moved again, this time to the University of California-Davis, but did not sire any more foals after leaving Harris Farms. The horse died in 2016.
