The juveniles of 1973 were generally considered less than stellar, but Talking Picture was a solid and deserving champion whose record might have been better had she not made what proved to be a futile mid-season trip to California. She was clearly the best 2-year-old filly on the New York circuit and raced creditably over a distance that was probably too far for her when taken to Maryland for the Selima Stakes at season’s end. Her 3-year-old season failed to reach the same level, but she proved to be an even better broodmare than racer.
Race record
15 starts, 6 wins, 2 seconds, 3 thirds, $178,643

Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 2-year-old filly (1973)
Assessments
Highweighted among juvenile fillies at 121 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juveniles of 1973, 2 pounds above second-rated Chris Evert.
Rated at 113 pounds on the Daily Racing Form’s Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1974, 13 pounds below champion Chris Evert.
As an individual
A small, plain dark bay or brown mare, Talking Picture was short-coupled with a round barrel and short cannons. Her shoulder was good and her legs were clean. She had excellent musculature about the stifles and gaskins. She was indifferent as to track conditions, was a determined racer, and could be rated; nonetheless, she did not appear to stay even a mile, though she did have excuses in both her juvenile starts at a mile or more. She typically came from off the pace and seldom won by much. She preferred to race on the outside and could not recover easily from being bumped. Trainer John Camp described her as the “most generous filly I ever saw.”
As a producer
Talking Picture produced 15 named foals, of which 13 started and 10 won. Her important foals are as follow:

Fun facts
- Talking Picture was the first filly to sweep Saratoga’s trio of important races for juvenile fillies—the Schuylerville Stakes, the Adirondack Stakes, and the Spinaway Stakes.
- Talking Picture’s win in the 1973 Matron Stakes nearly didn’t happen. She had gone into heat and, on the morning of the race, flipped herself over a fence. Fortunately, she was not hurt, was cleared to race, and ended up winning the Matron by a head.
