A big, strong, good-looking horse, Dancing Moss had the robustness characteristic of his female family but lacked the brilliance that both his sire and maternal grandsire had possessed. Exported to Argentina, he proved a better sire than racehorse.

Dancing Moss was the Argentine champion sire of 1973 and was among the top 10 Argentine general sires on five other occasions. He was also among the top 10 Argentine broodmare sires six times, peaking at fourth in 1988 and 1990. According to records kept by The Jockey Club (which may be incomplete), Dancing Moss sired 37 stakes winners from 210 named foals.

Dancing Moss was bred by Marie A. Moore. Following his racing career, he was sold to Haras Argentino and exported to Argentina. His last registered foals were born in 1984.


Pedigree notes

Dancing Moss is inbred 5x4 to Swynford. He is a half brother to stakes-placed Flight Dancer (by Misty Flight), dam of 1986 Irish champion 2-year-old filly Minstrella (by The Minstrel) and Grade II winner Misty Gallore (by Halo) and second dam of Grade III winners Minidar and Colonial Minstrel and the good sire Silver Ghost. Flight Dancer is also the third dam of 2005 American Horse of the Year Saint Liam; 2018 United Nations Handicap (USA-IT) winner Funtastic; 2012 Del Mar Futurity (USA-IA) winner Rolling Fog; Grade II winners A Little Warm, Fly So High and Quiet Giant; and Grade III winners Almasty, Congressionalhonor and Pleasant Strike.

Courbette, the dam of Dancing Moss, was a multiple stakes winner in Ireland. She is a half sister to stakes winner Mlle. Lorette (by Lovely Night), dam of European stakes winners Lovely Gale (by Windy City II) and Mlle. Barker (by Mossborough). Mlle. Lorette is also the second dam of English Group III winner Hatta and of multiple stakes winner Au Printemps, dam of 1987 Breeders' Cup Juvenile (USA-I) winner Success Express, 1989 Canadian champion turf horse Charlie Barley and 1999 Champagne Stakes (USA-I) winner Greenwood Lake. In addition, Mlle. Lorette also the third dam of 1997 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (ENG-I) winner Air Express, a Classic winner in Italy and Germany; 2003 Sword Dancer Invitational Handicap (USA-I) winner Whitmore's Conn; Grade II winner Mud Route; and multiple Grade III winner Casa Eire.

Courbette is out of 1946 American champion handicap mare Gallorette (by Challenger II), a member of the National Museum of Racing Hall of Fame. In addition to her two stakes-winning daughters, Gallorette produced Gallamoud (by Mahmoud), dam of 1966 Irish St. Leger winner White Gloves II (by High Hat), and Galla Vista (by Discovery), second dam of English Group III winner Limone and third dam of Australian Group III winner Pavista. Gallorette herself is out of Gallette (by Sir Gallahad III), whose full sister La France produced 1939 dual Classic winner Johnstown (by Jamestown) and 1937 American champion 2-year-old filly Jacola (by Jacopo; dam of 1937 American champion 3-year-old male Phalanx, by Pilate). Gallette is also a half sister to three stakes winners including 1927 Gazelle Stakes winner Flambino (by Wrack), dam of 1935 American Triple Crown winner Omaha and 1938 Ascot Gold Cup winner Flares (both by Gallant Fox).
