Forty Niner (USA) x Beware of the Cat (USA), by Caveat (USA)
Family 8-c
A colt hampered by his late-running style and an often lackadaisical attitude toward training and racing, Editor’s Note only occasionally delivered the kind of top efforts of which he was capable. His wins in the 1996 Belmont Stakes (USA-G1) and Isle of Capri Super Derby (USA-G1) were his only wins of any kind at 3, and he did not improve at 4, winning only one minor race from nine starts that year. He has followed a similar pattern at stud, getting a few good horses but remaining a disappointment overall.
Race record
31 starts, 6 wins, 4 seconds, 3 thirds, US$1,601,394
1995:
1996:
Assessments
Rated at 118 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile males of 1995, 8 pounds below co-highweights Maria's Mon (the official divisional champion) and Unbridled's Song.
As an individual
A handsome chestnut, Editor’s Note was muscular with a well laid back shoulder and strong hindquarters but was somewhat weaker in the loin coupling than his sire. His closing style left him vulnerable to traffic problems and he had a tendency to lose focus and hang in the stretch although he possessed a strong finishing kick.
As a stallion
According to records kept by The Jockey Club, Editor’s Note has sired 368 winners (52.9%) and 18 stakes winners (2.6%) from 696 named foals of racing age as of April 20, 2022.
Notable progeny
Bogeyman (ARG), In Writing (ARG), Peperoncina (ARG)
Notable progeny of daughters
