Sired by two-time American Horse of the Year Curlin (winner of the 2007 Breeders’ Cup Classic, USA-G1) out of a Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1) runner-up whose sire Vindication won the only 9-furlong edition of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (USA-G1), Elite Power at first glance appeared to have the bloodlines of a two-turn runner. Broadway’s Alibi was a multiple graded stakes winner who turned in her lifetime best performance over 7 furlongs, however, and Elite Power turned out to be a mama’s boy with regard to distance. Hampered by physical issues early on, Elite Power took until age 4 to tally his first win but was the best male sprinter in American racing at ages 4 and 5 and only the third male horse to win back-to-back Eclipse Awards in the sprint division.

Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion male sprinter (2022,2023)
Assessments
Rated at 116 pounds in the Sprint category on the 2022 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 24 pounds below overall highweight Flightline (the American Horse of the Year), 10 pounds below top-rated sprinter Nature Stripe, and 6 pounds below the top-rated sprinter on dirt, Speaker’s Corner.
Rated at 122 pounds in the Sprint category on the 2023 Longines World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, 13 pounds below overall highweight Equinox (the Japanese Horse of the Year) and 3 pounds below the top-rated sprinter, Lucky Sweynesse, but tops among sprinters on dirt.
As an individual
A well-balanced chestnut horse standing a shade under 16.1 hands, Elite Power is leggy by sprinter standards but has a deep, sweeping shoulder, powerful hindquarters, short cannons, and well let down hocks. He handled both fast and off going and was determined when set down for a drive. His temperament is said to be calm and professional.
As a stallion
Elite Power is standing his first season in 2024 in Kentucky at Juddmonte Farms.
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Elite Power was bred by Alpha Delta Stables. A US$900,000 purchase from the 2019 Keeneland September yearling sale, he was owned by Juddmonte Farms. He was trained by Bill Mott and was ridden to his Breeders' Cup Sprint victories by Irad Ortiz Jr. He entered stud in 2024 at Juddmonte Farms.
Pedigree notes
Elite Power is inbred 3x4 to two-time American champion sire Mr. Prospector. He is the only winner produced from Broadway’s Alibi, who scored her biggest win when running off with the 2012 Forward Gal Stakes (USA-G2) by 16¾ lengths. A daughter of 2002 American champion 2-year-old male Vindication, she is a half sister to multiple Grade 3 winner Golden Lad (by Medaglia d’Oro) and to Grade 1-placed restricted stakes winner R Gypsy Gold (by Bernardini). Broadway’s Alibi is also a half sister to Drinks on Broadway (by Stay Thirsty), dam of stakes winner Lights of Broadway (by City of Light).
Broadway’s Alibi and her siblings are out of listed juvenile stakes winner Broadway Gold (by Seeking the Gold), a half sister to 2011 Florida Derby (USA-G1) winner Dialed In (by Mineshaft). Broadway Gold is also a half sister to Mama Yay (by Mineshaft), dam of Grade 2-placed multiple stakes winner Empire House (by Empire Maker).
The next dam in Elite Power’s tail-female line is stakes-placed Miss Doolittle (by Storm Cat), a half sister to Group 2-placed Irish listed stakes winner Samuel Morse (by Danehill Dancer). Produced from 1992 American champion 2-year-old filly Eliza (by Mt. Livermore), Miss Doolittle is also a half sister to Our Fair Lady (by Theatrical), dam of stakes winner Butters (by El Prado) and second dam of 2017 Queen of the Turf Stakes (AUS-G1) winner Foxplay.
