Black Gold never won a stakes at the Fair Grounds but died there at the age of 7 and is buried in the track infield. He was inducted into the Fair Grounds Racing Hall of Fame as part of its inaugural class in 1971. The Black Gold Stakes is slated for February 28, and the tradition of the race requires that the winning jockey lay flowers on Black Gold's grave. Good sleuthing, all of you who weighed in on this challenge!
