Since Eclipse Award voting began in 1971, two horses have earned two American championships each by winning a single American race in their respective divisions in each year. Name them and the years and divisions in which they earned their honors.

In 1999 Daylami was voted American Champion Male Grass Horse by winning the only race he ran in America, The BC Turf.

Great answers, TJ, but I may not have been clear in my original question. The horses I am thinking of each won two American championships, each time based on a single race in North America. Keep digging!

Now that I re-read it you were very clear...wow who did it two times?

Miesque won Champion Grass Mare in 1987 and 1988 by taking only the BC Mile in both those years.

Great job, TJ...and I have a confession to make. I knew about Miesque, of course, but I missed the fact that Goldikova did it twice---can you name the other horse I had in mind?

That would be High Chaparral, Champion Grass Horse 2002 and 2003.

PS. In 2003 High Chaparral dead heated with Johar for the win in the BC Turf.

PPS....I think I found another one, Ouija Board, Champion Grass Mare in 2004 and 2006. She won the BC Filly and Mare turf in the corresponding years.

Looks like I have some egg on my face this week, but thanks to TJ, we now have no less than four horses tracked down who between them won eight Eclipse Awards on a single race each---all in the turf divisions, and all based on Breeders' Cup wins. They are Miesque, High Chaparral, Goldikova and Ouija Board. Well done, TJ!

So far as I know, the lowest number of starts a dirt champion has made since Eclipse Award voting began would be Seattle Slew's three as a 2-year-old, when he was crowned champion juvenile male. In 2004, Wilko (who made his only U.S. start of the year in winning the BC Juvenile) tied Declan's Moon atop the Experimental Free Handicap, but he didn't get an Eclipse Award out of it.

Thanks Avalyn. I thought it would be tough to do it on the dirt....only reason we had 4 that were able to do it on turf is because they had full seasons in their homeland. Still have to hand to the Euro trainers and horses that pulled it off, great horses and great horsemanship to accomplish that feat with a single opportunity to get it done. TJ
