Like the four-minute mile in track and field, the two-minute barrier for 10 furlongs in horse racing was one thought impossible to break for long decades. Who was the horse who finally accomplished the feat, and at what track did he make his mark?

Well Northern Dancer ran the 1-1/4 mile Derby in 2.00 flat - I'm not sure if that is the barrier breaker. Secretariat ran it in 1.59 2/5 and in my opinion that on is the barrier BREAKER. He was the first horse to BREAK the 2 minute barrier.

Im not sure who the horse is but the closest I came was Coaltown in the 1949 Gulfstream Park Handicap where he tied the world record for 10 furlongs in 1:59 4/5. Im guessing maybe the anwser to the trivia is the horse whos record he tied but I dont know who that horse is.

Think I found it in my old copy of William Robertson’s History of TB Racing in America. Shannon II ran 1:59 4/5 at Golden Gate in 1948. That was the record equaled by Coaltown. Don’t know the race though.

I think you're right Babara. Shannon II in 1948 at Golden Gate during the Golden Gate Handicap.

I read that Shannon II set the American record for 10 furlongs with that win in the Golden Gate Handicap but also tied the world record. I think the horse we are looking for is the horse he tied but I may be wrong.

Barbara got it with Shannon II (whose feat is mentioned in the "Fun Facts" for Whisk Broom II).
