Since we are coming to the close of Women's History Month, here's a three-part question that fits the theme. Who was 1) the first woman to own a Kentucky Derby winner, 2) the first woman to breed a Kentucky Derby winner and 3) the first woman to both own and breed a Kentucky Derby winner?

Laska Durnell owned Elwood, who won the Kentucky Derby in 1904. Elwood also had the distinction of being the first winner bred by a woman, Mrs. J.B. Prather.

Was Rosa Hoots the first woman to own and breed a Kentucky Derby winner with Black Gold in 1924?

Well if you want to answer the 3 part question as a whole the answer is Rosa Hoots, the breeder and owner of 1924 winner Black Gold.

However if you want to break it up, then the answer is 1904 Elwood's breeder Mrs. J.B. Prather, and his owner Laska Durnell, who's husband was Elwood's trainer.
