Although this horse was judged to be the best American 3-year-old of his year, he won only one stakes race that year and to this day is better remembered for his part in a race he lost than for the important race he won. Name him.

It was Head Play, whose sole major victory of 1933 was in the Preakness Stakes. He was second in the notorious "Fighting Finish" Kentucky Derby, won by Brokers Tip.

There were years, though, when the Derby Trial was run as a "purse race" (allowance) rather than as an added-money stakes. This was apparently the case that year.
