"Eclipse first, the rest nowhere," reflects the fact that the great 18th-century champion routinely left his opponents outside the distance pole (beyond which no placings were made) on the four-mile courses typical of his time. Modern racing no longer uses a distance pole, but some champions have still had some amazingly long margins recorded in the record books. What horse holds the 20th-century record for the greatest recorded margin in a major stakes race in North America, and in what race was the record set?

It's got to be Man o' War in the 1920 Lawrence Realization, a victory thought to be a hundred lengths. I think he set a world record time in that race as well.

I think duchess got it with Man O' War in the 1920 Lawrence Realization. He won by 100 lengths, but some people thought it may have actually been 200 lengths.

Yes, it was Man o' War. Noted racing writer Joe Palmer was among those who thought that the true margin was more like 200 lengths.
