While the daughters of Northern Dancer generally did not gain the acclaim accorded to the great sire's sons, Northern Trick proved herself to be among his best offspring of either sex by becoming the best 3-year-old filly in Europe in her year. She was only modestly successful as a broodmare during her own producing career, but her family continues to expand through the descendants of her daughters.

Foaled at Hermitage Farm in Kentucky, Northern Trick was bred by Warner L. Jones and William S. Farish III. She was owned by Stavros Niarchos, who bought her for US$530,000 as a yearling from the 1982 Keeneland July sale with the British Bloodstock Agency acting as agent. She was trained by François Boutin. As a broodmare, Northern Trick was owned by the Niarchos family's Flaxman Holdings. The last report of her was as barren in 2002.
