A high-class juvenile, Surfside kicked off her 3-year-old campaign with three straight graded wins against her own division, two of them at the Grade 1 level. She then tackled males in the Santa Anita Derby (USA-G1) but came up short and with an injury that knocked her out of the major 3-year-old filly events of the spring and summer. Returning in the fall, she was second to fellow 3-year-old and stablemate Spain in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff but then staked her claim to the divisional championship by stepping outside it to defeat older males by four lengths in the Clark Handicap (USA-G2). The voters rewarded her audacity with an Eclipse Award, but Surfside was unable to follow up at 4 and retired after two starts. She had some success as a broodmare.

Assessments
Co-highweighted with divisional champion Chilukki and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner Cash Run at 123 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile fillies of 1999.
Rated at 120 pounds on the International Classifications, 12 pounds below overall highweight Sinndar; 6 pounds below the top distaffer, Egyptband (a 3-year-old); and 2 pounds below the top 3-year-old fillies on dirt, Jostle and Spain.
As an individual
A solidly made, rather plain bay mare with a beautifully sloped shoulder and prominent withers, Surfside was leggier than her dam and had a cresty neck as a broodmare. She was indifferent as to track conditions. Laid back in the barn, she preferred to run on or close to the lead. She underwent surgery for bone chips in an ankle following the 2000 Santa Anita Derby.
As a producer
Surfside produced eight named foals, of which six started and five won. Her important foals are as follow:
