Tinnitus is one of the mysteries of breeding that pops up to puzzle students of the Thoroughbred, as her credentials for becoming an important broodmare were no better than those of thousands of far less accomplished producers. A mare of modest antecedents on the dam’s side, Tinnitus showed little of the speed of her sire Restless Wind as a race mare. As a broodmare, however, she was able to pass that speed on, becoming the dam, second dam, and third dam of champions in the Americas.

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Tinnitus was bred by Edward Flynn, who sold her for US$23,000 at the 1976 Keeneland September yearling sale. She was owned by J. T. Segura and R. Segura, who bred her first two foals in the name of Segura Farm. She was then sold for US$65,000 at the 1982 Keeneland Jaunary mixed sale, in foal to Full Out, and became the property of Marshall Robinson, who bred or co-bred her next 10 foals. Tinnitus then changed hands again in a private transaction and produced two foals for John R. Gaines Thoroughbreds. Her last two foals were bred by Jular Farms. She was euthanized due to the infirmities of old age in June 2000 at Knockgriffin Farm near Paris, Kentucky.
Pedigree notes
Sired by 1958 Arlington Futurity and Washington Park Futurity winner Restless Wind, Tinnitus is inbred 5x4 to 1911 English champion older male Swynford and 1913 Futurity Stakes winner Pennant through the closely related mares Sugar Run (second dam of Restless Wind) and Cathy (second dam of Tinnitus, both by sons of Swynford out of daughters of Pennant. She is a full sister to stakes-placed Resting Wind, dam of juvenile stakes winner Whatever’s Right and the second dam of 1996 Trinidadian champion 2-year-old filly Ma Ma Do Do. Tinnitus is also a full sister to Elakonee Wind, dam of English stakes winner Telsmoss and third dam of South African Group 2 winner Golden Silvino. In addition, Tinnitus is a half sister to 1970 Del Mar Derby winner Mayhedo (by Hillary).
Tinnitus and her siblings are out of stakes-placed Dors, a full sister to stakes winner Mayhego. Sired by the Court Martial horse Corporal II, Dors is also a full sister to Dorporal, dam of juvenile stakes winner Er Bear (by Dusty Canyon). The next dam in the tail-female line, Cathy (by Challenger II) is an unraced full sister to Flag of Truce, dam of the stakes-winning steeplechasers Indian Truce (by Cochise) and Fairfax (by Mr. Trouble). Cathy, in turn, is out of the winning Pennant mare Flag Trick, whose dam Trique is an unraced daughter of the top handicap horse Cudgel.

Fun facts
- Tinnitus is the name of a common medical condition in which a person hears noises (usually described as ringing, buzzing, roaring, or humming) in one or both ears that are audible only to the person. The condition ranges from mild, intermittent cases that cause no significant distress to cases in which the noises are constant and disruptive, sometimes impairing normal hearing. It is usually associated with noise-induced hearing loss but may result from other medical conditions or from the side effects of some medications.
