Boldnesian's career was brilliant but brief. After losing his first start, he won four straight, culminating in a nose victory over Jacinto in the Santa Anita Derby. Unfortunately, he came out of the race with a knee chip that forced his retirement. In spite of a tendency to pass unsoundness to his stock, he became a good sire and continued Bold Ruler's male line through his son Bold Reasoning, sire of the great Seattle Slew. Another son, Bold Ruckus, was a highly successful sire in Canada.
