Had she not followed in the immediate wake of the brilliant and tragic Ruffian—and had she been a bit more durable—Revidere might be remembered with the greats today. The talent was certainly there, given her consistent mastery of a filly as good as six-time Grade 1 winner Optimistic Gal and a bravura 14-length victory in the Ruffian Stakes (USA-G1) over a field that included champion older female Proud Delta. A measure of the regard in which she was held during her championship season was the fact that she was the odds-on favorite for the Jockey Club Gold Cup (USA-G1) against older males, though she finished third that day after setting the pace for the first mile and a quarter. She was a far better racer than producer.
Race record
11 starts, 8 wins, 2 seconds, 1 thirds, US$330,019
1976:
Honors
Eclipse Award, American champion 3-year-old female (1976)
Assessments
Highweighted at 128 pounds on the Daily Racing Form's Free Handicap for American 3-year-old fillies of 1976, 3 pounds above second-place Optimistic Gal.
As an individual
An imposing but somewhat awkward-looking chestnut mare with a long stride, Revidere stood 16.2½ hands and girthed 74 inches at the end of her 3-year-old season. Her underpinnings were marred by offset knees, pigeon toes, and rough-looking ankles. She preferred to race on or close to the lead and had an excellent turn of foot, but she could be willful and tended to make her move when she chose rather than as her jockey directed. While resolute when challenged, she typically required constant riding while in a race and was a less than enthusiastic work horse. She handled both fast and off tracks with aplomb.
As a producer
Revidere produced 11 named foals, of which six started and won. Her important foals are as follow:
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Revidere was bred by Claiborne Farm and was owned by William Haggin Perry. She was trained by David Whiteley. Her first four foals were bred by a partnership between Claiborne Farm's Seth Hancock (under the name of Cherry Tree Farm) and Perry (under the names of The Marjory Corporation and The Gamely Corporation). In 1984, Revidere was consigned to the Keeneland November mixed sale in foal to Coastal and was sold for US$575,000. The mare produced six foals (including the Coastal filly she was carrying at the time of her sale) as the property of Mandysland Farm (Richard Eamer) and Enemy Stable and produced her last foal, Slew's Review, as the property of Mandysland Farm alone.
