Never more than a solid allowance runner in a career marred by soundness issues, Privately Held dropped into low-level claimers toward the close of his racing career and failed to finish in his final start. Fortunately for him, he had the pedigree to be a suitable stallion prospect for the export market, and his fortunes turned when he was exported to Peru. He became the premier stallion at Peru's leading stud farm, Haras Gina-Santa Rosa, where he won six Peruvian sire championships, equaling the record of the great Peruvian sire Postin. In North America, Privately Held is best known as the broodmare sire of 2016 Belmont Stakes (USA-G1) winner Creator.
Race record
27 starts, 8 wins, 7 seconds, 3 thirds, US$159,241
2000:
As an individual
A bay horse, Privately Held did not start until he was a 4-year-old and had a career marked by several long absences from the track. He did his best racing when staying within three to five lengths off the pace early and launching a bid on the final turn, suggesting that he lacked a brilliant turn of foot.
As a stallion
Privately Held was a source of stamina. According to records compiled by The Jockey Club, he sired 253 winners (80.0%) and 25 stakes winners (7.9%) from 318 named foals of racing age.

Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Privately Held was bred by Flaxman Holdings, Ltd., the breeding arm of the Niarchos family's Thoroughbred holdings. A US$210,000 yearling at the 1995 Keeneland July yearling sale, he began his racing career in the colors of Morven Stud. He went through the sale ring again at Saratoga in 1999, bringing US$18,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York Horses of Racing Age sale, and was sold to owner-trainer Daniel J. Lopez, who later sold an interest in Privately Held to Theodore Shapiro. The horse was claimed by E & G Stables from his first start at age 8, a US$7,500 claimer at Philadelphia Park, and spent the rest of his racing career in the barn of John McCaslin. After his career-ending injury, Privately Held was sold privately and was exported to Peru in 2003. His last crop of foals was registered in Peru in 2014.
