Alabama is not normally thought of as a place to breed high-quality Thoroughbreds, but Fred Hooper never let himself be constraints of “we’ve always done it that way” when it came to either his location or the bloodlines he used in his breeding program. Among the horses he produced at his Alabama ranch before moving his breeding operation to Florida was Smartaire, who was not a great runner but became a Kentucky Broodmare of the Year with champion Smart Angle and three other stakes winners to her credit. Her bloodlines live on through her multiple Grade 2-winning son Smarten, a good sire, and several daughters have figured in the production of graded or Group stakes winners.
Race record
35 starts, 4 wins, 7 seconds, 2 thirds, US$13,925

Connections
Foaled in Alabama, Smart Angle was bred and owned by Fred W. Hooper. In 1972, she was purchased for US$32,000 from the Keeneland November mixed sale by James Ryehill and spent the rest of her broodmare career at his Ryehill Farm (which he co-owned with his wife Eleanor).
Pedigree notes
Sired by the Argentine import Quibu (a major stakes winner in Argentina and Uruguay), Smartaire is outcrossed through five generations. She is a full sister to 1966 Alcibiades Stakes winner Teacher's Art, dam of Grade 2 winner Beat Inflation (by Crozier). She is also a half sister to Teacher's Joy (by Daryl's Joy), dam of multiple stakes winner Dramatic Joy (by Riverman) and third dam of Grade 3 winner Semaphore Man.
Smartaire is out of the Olympia mare Art Teacher, a half sister to 1971 Fountain of Youth Stakes winner Authorize (by Crozier) and the good stakes mare Teacation (by Quibu), dam of stakes winners Crocation (by Crozier) and Noble Warrior (by Roberto) and second dam of 1974 Acorn Stakes (USA-G1) winner Special Team, dam in turn of Grade 2 winner Triteamri (by Tri Jet).
