Untapable was nearly untouchable as a 3-year-old. An easy winner of the Kentucky Oaks (USA-G1), she was beaten only once in 2014 (this when tackling eventual Breeders’ Cup Classic, USA-G1, winner Bayern and other males in the William Hill Haskell Invitational, USA-G1) and whipped older females in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff (USA-G1). A Grade 2 winner as a 2-year-old, she was a Grade 1 winner again at 4 but was not as brilliant as she had been at 3. She is now a broodmare for Winchell Thoroughbreds.

Eclipse Award, American champion 3-year-old filly (2014)
Assessments
Rated at 117 pounds on the Experimental Free Handicap for American juvenile fillies of 2013, 6 pounds below co-highweights She's a Tiger (the official divisional champion) and Grey Goose Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (USA-G1) winner Ria Antonia (who was also that year's Canadian champion 2-year-old filly).
Rated at 119 pounds on the 2014 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for her performance in the Kentucky Oaks, 11 pounds below overall highweight Just a Way (Japan’s champion older male) but tops among fillies and mares on dirt.
Rated at 115 pounds on the 2015 World’s Best Racehorse Rankings for her performance in the Apple Blossom Handicap, 19 pounds below overall highweight American Pharoah (who earned his rating in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, USA-G1) and 8 pounds below Beholder, the top-rated female on dirt.
As an individual
An attractive bay mare with extremely strong hindquarters, Untapable is a horse of great presence but has much of the unsociable nature of her dam. She could be a bit high-strung and testy but became more professional as she matured. She was quite territorial about her stall while racing.
As a producer
As of March 23, 2024, Untapable has produced the winning 2018 colt Brentley (by Frankel) and the unraced 2021 colt Imposing (by Gun Runner).
Connections
Foaled in Kentucky, Untapable was bred and owned by Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds. She was trained by Steve Asmussen and was ridden to her Kentucky Oaks score by Rosie Napravnik.
Pedigree notes
Untapable is outcrossed through five generations. She is a full sister to Red House, dam of Grade 2 winner Red Route One (by Gun Runner), and to Double Tapped, dam of Grade 3 winner Majestic Eagle (by Medaglia d’Oro). She is also a half sister to 2010 Secretariat Stakes (USA-G1) winner Paddy O’Prado (by El Prado).
Untapable is by the unsociable but talented Fun House (by 1985 Breeders’ Cup Turf, USA-G1, winner Prized), winner of the 2004 Buena Vista Handicap (USA-G2). A half sister to Grade 2 winner Early Flyer (by Gilded Time) and to Alize (by Lord Carson), dam of Turkish listed stakes winner My Secret (by Zanjero), Fun House is out of Bistra, a winning daughter of multiple stakes winner Classic Go Go and a half sister to 1991 Hollywood Derby (USA-G1) winner Olympio (by Naskra). Bistra is also a half sister to juvenile Grade 2 winner Call Now (by Wild Again), second dam of 2011 Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile (USA-G1) winner Tapizar, and to stakes winner Your Call (by Wild Again). In addition, Bistra is a half sister to Grade 3-placed Carol’s Wonder (by Pass the Tab), dam of Grade 2 winner Wild Wonder (by Wild Again) and second dam of 2009 Forego Handicap (USA-G1) winner Pyro and Grade 3 winner War Echo; to Dana Nicole (by Flying Paster) dam of Grade 2 winner Bien Nicole (by Bien Bien); and to Christmas Star (by Star de Naskra), dam of 2003 Futurity Stakes (USA-G1) winner Cuvee (by Carson City) and Grade 2 winner Will He Shine (by Silver Deputy).
Bistra and her siblings were produced from Carols Christmas (by the stakes-winning Crimson Satan horse Whitesburg). A half sister to English stakes winner Al Stanza (by Al Hattab), Carols Christmas is out of Light Verse, an unraced daughter of 1968 Michigan Derby winner Reverse (by Turn-to) out of the Tuscany mare Brighton View.
