In most cases in which full brothers go to stud, the better racehorse is usually the better stallion, benefiting from whatever genetic superiority helped him to racing stardom as well as from better books of mares. Not for Love and his champion full brother Rhythm were notable exceptions to the rule. While Rhythm was a failure except for some top runners in New Zealand, stakes-placed Not for Love became a perennial sire leader in the Mid-Atlantic region. On the national scene, he is best known as the broodmare sire of the popular two-time American Horse of the Year, California Chrome.
Race record
29 starts, 6 wins, 7 seconds, 5 thirds, US$178,870

As an individual
A handsome, well-balanced bay horse with a good shoulder and hip, Not for Love had the straight, strong hind leg typical of the Mr. Prospector tribe. He stood 16 hands. His disposition was generally easy-going.
As a stallion
While Not for Love did not sire any Grade 1 winners or national champions, he was noted for the consistent quality of his stock. Most have been correct and durable, though many have had attitudes described as “tough” or “quirky.” Not for Love has also developed a reputation for siring good sport horses with excellent jumping ability.
